You cannot go to many forums without seeing what are known as signature links. They are the little lines of text at the bottom of posts. Usually they have links back to the poster's sites. The query is are signature links effective for search engine optimization and traffic generation? Although there is a lot of controversy on the subject the answer is yes and no.Yes signature links are good for traffic on sites where people are discussing topics near to your business or website content. If you choose popular ones to participate on you can bring 30 or more visitors to your site per day. They also do in fact give you backlinks and can assist with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) allowing your sites to rank a little higher when someone does a search for a keyword. However by themselves they are weak.
Nobody should have their sites propped up in search engine results by signature links in forums. Now notice I stated signature links in forums. The truth is there are signature links in lots of other web 2.0 sites that are not forums. The majority of these signatures are on pages where other content can be added such as blogs and articles. These mimic full pages and not just lines at the bottom of a forum post. They can create balance to your backlinks. They are on sites where you can involve yourself and add content and input just as you would a forum.
Still any backlink strategy that relies on one thing is not good. So finding sites where you can exchange links, creating great content so that people want to link back to naturally and blogging (Along with article writing) must be added to signature linking. Furthermore as the Net evolves you must move away from signature links in forums and replace them with sites that allow you multiple ways of linking to you site (while building content for the sites you participate on).
These are no longer hard things to find if you be familiar with how to look and several services provide lists for those who are too busy to look for them and the last thing that people should be doing is actually buying signature links which is also a common practice. Even though forum linking like that is still viable it only takes a wave of the hand by Google or the forum software developers and all such links can be counted worthless. That day is almost certain to come if it hasn't already.
Whatsoever you do you want to use effective tools and strategies to get as much search engine traffic as you can. Getting backlinks and learning the rules of SEO are extremely significant.
