Five Points You have to Know About PageRank

A PageRank (PR) is a way Google measures the relative importance of each web page based on the frequency they're referred to throughout the internet across different sites.

Here are few points you can go through, to better understand PageRank.

  1. Webmasters use Google toolbar PageRank having values from 0 to 10 to access the importance of a site. But the PR system that Google employs is slightly different.

Though both operate on a numerical basis, the real PR that Google employs is expressed with larger figures reaching even millions, as opposed to Toolbar page rank that has "10" as the highest rank.

For instance, if you take 2 web pages one with PR of 4 and another with PR 6, the difference among them is not simply 2, but it is much higher. Unluckily, no one knows how Google calculates PR of a site.

Each PR level is exponentially greater than the previous level. Hence it is difficult to go from PR 2 to PR 3 and much more difficult to go from PR 4 to PR 5.

  2. Remember that Google assesses web pages, not sites.

  3. If a site has all backlinks from only one web domain, then the site is not considered as "important" and it will be given a low PR of 1.

  4. To get a higher PR, one must continuously build backlinks to a site.

  5. The PR toolbar is changed every three months. This is why certain pages appear higher in the search engine results than other web pages with superior figures.

After stacking up few pages in its index, Google rates these pages according to the trust as well as popularity they've across different sites.
